Parts of a Car Engine
I am going to give you a rundown of basic car engine parts
for people who do not know and are maybe interested in learning.
Cylinder
This is the core of the engine where the pistons will move
up and down. most cars will have more than one engine cylinder four, six and
eight cylinders are common. In a multi cylinder engine they are usually
arranged as a v, flat or inline. Different arrangements have different
advantages and disadvantages regarding smoothness, cost, and shape. These
various advantages and disadvantages are what makes them suitable for that car.
Spark Plug
This plays a small but important role in the car engine. The
spark plug creates the spark that will ignite the air/fuel mixture for the
combustion to start.
Valves
The intake valves let in the air and fuel and the exhaust
valves let out the gas after it has been used. The valves must be closed for
compression and combustion so that the combustion chamber is sealed.
Piston and Piston Rings
The piston is a cylindrical piece of metal that moves up and
down inside the cylinder while the rings provide the sliding seal between the
piston and cylinder. This seal prevents the fuel air mixture from leaking
during compression and combustion and keeps the oil from leaking into the
combustion area where it would be burned and wasted.
Crankshaft
This is what moves the pistons up and down in the cylinder.
This happens in a remarkably similar fashion as cranks on a Jack in a box.
Sump
The sump is what surrounds the crankshaft and contains a
large amount of oil which collects at the bottom of the sump.
